As part of the Holt Summer Festival (22-30th July), we are delighted to be showing paintings/prints by Jane Human and vivid colour vessels in fused glass by Ruth Shelley.

Jane Human is a painter and printmaker whose origins are in the East Anglian fens and whose main focus is the interpretation of landscape, space and boundaries. Her interest is primarily in the sense of place and response to experiences of being immersed in a particular environment rather than to specifically record its topography.

“I am drawn to coastal terrain and transient shifting vistas, those often vast spaces defined only by the horizon, where one can see the connections between land, sea and sky. I’m particularly inspired by the marshes, creeks and beaches of north Norfolk. There is a sense that this landscape of wide skies and horizontal flow is in my genes. I’d say that it is a quiet and often modest land, with interest to be found in subtle texture, passing light, fleeting reflections, unexpected colour. I’m interested in places which reveal their beauty slowly, and reward patient looking”.

Ruth Shelley specialises in contemporary glass design using vivid, dramatic colours in kiln formed glass. Much of her work is inspired by her love of travelling; observation of the beautiful horizons and dramatic shapes and forms of landscape and coastline.

Through layered glass Ruth creates a dialogue of lines, patterns and colour. Ruth always observes how the colours and layers combine as a whole, and how light illuminates them.
