Louis Turpin 'Garden Journeys'

Categories:

Date:
Saturday, 9 September 2017 to Saturday, 30 September 2017

In an exhibition which celebrates some of the most important gardens in the British Isles, Louis Turpin articulates the passion and achievements of some of the greatest garden designers of our time. Turpin’s broad brushstrokes and vivid use of colour capture the natural beauty of the National Trust’s Glendurgan in Cornwall, and the exotic, sub-tropical gardens of Tremenheere. In sharp contrast to these southern climates, he has also recently visited the Edinburgh Physic Gardens and depicts the tightly-knit planting schemes of herbs and medicinal plants. Turpin’s Garden Journey has also taken him via the Rococo joys of Painswick Gardens in Stroud and the formalised gardens and natural woodlands of Hole Park in Kent.

The gardens of Great Dixter in East Sussex have held lifelong fascination for the artist. Christopher Lloyd’s bold planting schemes sent shock waves through the horticultural world and Turpin’s sensitivity and understanding of this flamboyant garden result in paintings which bring the floral tapestries alive on the canvas and his visual awareness captures the very essence of this corner of England.

The exhibition also provides a wonderful opportunity to see privately designed gardens by the renowned English Garden Designer Rosemary Veerey OBE, which are not usually open to the public, but which Louis Turpin has been invited to document on canvas.

Louis Turpin has received international recognition for his garden paintings. His paintings feature in many public and private collections. He has received important commissions including a recent project to depict the gardens at Glyndebourne and was shortlisted for the National Portrait Award at the National Gallery in 1986. Louis Turpin is available for private commissions. Please contact Bohun Gallery for more information.
