JERWOOD MAKERS OPEN 2017

Categories:

Date:
Saturday, 16 September 2017 to Sunday, 5 November 2017

This group exhibition brings together work by the five participating artists selected for the sixth edition in the Jerwood Makers Open series.

The five artists - Sam Bakewell, Juli Bolaños Durman, Jessica Harrison, Marcin Rusak and Laura Youngson Coll - were selected from over 200 applications in response to a nationwide call for UK-based makers within 10 years of beginning their practice.  Each has been awarded £7,500 to realise their proposed works. The award, now in its new biennial fomat, provides makers with a budget and curatorial support to develop new work and ideas outside of conventional commissioning structures. The selectors for this initiative are: Deirdre Figueiredo MBD, Director, Craftspace; Skinder Hundal, CEO/Director, New Art Exchange; Geoffrey Mann, artist and Programme Director, Glass at Edinburgh College of Art; Clare Twomey, artist; and Sarah Williams, Head of Programme, Jerwood Visual Arts.

Starting at Jerwood Space, London, the exhibition is now touring nationally at New Brewery Arts until 5th November; followed by Devon Guild of Craftsmen, Devon; and Pier Arts Centre, Stromness.

The initiative was introduced to the Jerwood Visual Arts Programme in 2010 to recognise and promote the significance of making practice and process within contemporary visual arts, and since then Jerwood Charitable Foundation has provided £217,500 towards supporting 29 major new commissions.
