Sarah Muwanga is a British-Ugandan painter whose work explores the interior lives of Black women — their states of rest, resistance, longing and joy. Working in oil on canvas, she builds layered compositions that bring together the figurative and the decorative, the personal and the political.
Her paintings are quiet and watchful. Figures inhabit domestic spaces — beside lamps, among plants, beneath flowering skies — yet there is always a current running beneath the surface. The women in Muwanga’s work are not objects of observation; they are subjects with their own inward attention, their own presence in a room.
Muwanga studied in London, where she continues to work. Her practice has attracted significant collector attention, and Tethered — Where the Line Holds marks her first solo exhibition at CasildART in Connaught Village, W2.

Sarah Muwanga works primarily in oils and acrylic paint, exploring how bodies occupy space, negotiate pressure, and express selfhood through gesture, posture, and presence.
Her work has been featured at galleries such as LumiNoir Gallery and Fitzrovia Gallery, as well as in the World at War Exhibition, and has attracted growing attention from collectors and curators for its distinctive visual language, psychological depth, and nuanced exploration of belonging and becoming. She has even gone on to recently receive the 2026-27 NEAC artist scholarship, marking yet another milestone in her career.
Tethered: Where the Line Holds marks a significant milestone in her career as her debut solo exhibition, presenting her most ambitious and cohesive body of work to date.
CasildART is delighted to showcase Sarah’s work and contribute to the growing momentum of her career by presenting four new paintings that will be unveiled exclusively in this exhibition – in which Muwanga deepens her exploration of the figure as a site of grounding, belonging and restrained force.
