The Stanley Spencer Gallery in Cookham presents its winter exhibition, Revealing Genius, Conserving Art, spotlighting the monumental and unfinished Christ Preaching at Cookham Regatta through a fascinating exploration of Spencer’s studio practice and conservation. Featuring preparatory studies, rare archive material and live conservation, it offers a unique insight into Spencer’s working methods and his role in shaping modern British art.

Artist ( Description ):

Sir Stanley Spencer (1891–1959) is celebrated as one of the most original voices in modern British art. Deeply connected to his home village of Cookham, Spencer reimagined biblical narratives in everyday settings, blending the visionary with the familiar. His paintings reveal an extraordinary intensity of observation, emotional depth and spiritual resonance. The exhibition centres on his final large-scale project, highlighting both his technical mastery and continued influence on twentieth-century British painting.
