To accompany the exhibition Realm of the Sun, October Gallery are hosting the Symposium: Aubrey Williams Now, about this master of painterly abstraction. Consisting of key speakers who are experts in contemporary art, art history, music and ecology, the Symposium will address the historical and ecological relevance of Aubrey Williams’ work today. Paul Goodwin will chair the event with speakers including: Tim Smit, Gerard McBurney, Claudia Hucke, Mel Gooding, Ian Dudley, Paterson Joseph. This will include lunch and starts at 10.30am and concludes at 5.30pm and refreshments will be available until 6.30 pm, when the gallery will close.

About the Speakers:

Symposium Chair:  Paul Goodwin- UAL Chair of Black Art and Design and Member of TrAIN (Centre for Transnational Art, Identity and Nation) CCW.

Discussant: Gerard Houghton - Director of Special Projects, October Gallery.

Selected quotations by Aubrey Williams: Paterson Joseph - British actor. He is known for his roles in TV shows and films such as Peep Show, Law & Order, The Beach etc and for theatre roles such as Brutus in Caesar.

Gerard McBurney  - British composer, Artistic Programming Advisor to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Creative Director of the CSO's multimedia series Beyond the Score.

Claudia Hucke - Art Historian and Author. She is currently DAAD-Stipendiatin at the Institut für Kunstgeschichte, LMU München and previously Senior Lecturer in Art History at the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts, Kingston, Jamaica.

Sir Tim Smit, KBE  - Executive Vice-Chairman, and Co-founder of the award-winning Eden Project near St Austell in Cornwall.

Professor Mel Gooding  - art critic, writer and exhibition organiser. He has written many catalogue texts and has contributed extensively to the art press, and to magazines and newspapers.

Ian Dudley - PhD candidate in Art History and Theory, School of Philosophy and Art History; thesis title: Edward Goodall’s “Sketches in British Guiana”: Art, Anthropography and Colonialism in 19th Century Amazonia (expected completion 2016).
