How about being a foreigner, being a planet, being water, being a plant, being an animal, being an immigrant, being HIV positive, being non-binary, being a woman, being an indigenous person or being a guërx in contemporary Mexico, in the Americas, at the beginning of the 21st century? The artists in this exhibition refuse to give simple answers; instead they approach these questions in a metaphysical way, positioning them simultaneously in the fields of materiality and fluidity. Their artworks mix technology, nature, body and mass consumption society in elusive doppelgangers of everyday’s reality, but also of the screens we are constantly looking at. The non-binary, the unstable, positioning oneself at the margins of different cultures are proposed as discursive and dynamic axes to understand the exhibition. In Mexico, XEXX010101000 is a generic number attributed to a foreigner who is not registered by the national tax system. On the other hand, certain individuals are born with a different combination of four X and Y genes, compromising their strict binary gender differentiation.
