In a land where the border is a historical experience, a symbolic condition, and part of everyday life, IN ASCOLTO. TRACCE LUNGO IL MARGINE was born — a participatory art project conceived by QuiAltrove Associazione ETS and developed with artist Matteo Attruia.
The project explores the border not as a simple line of separation, but as a state of border — an emotional, political, linguistic, and human condition that runs through individuals, communities, and territories.
The exhibition-installation STATO DI CONFINE, opening on February 21, 2026 at The Circle in Gorizia, represents the public outcome of the project. It unfolds within the cross-border context of Gorizia and Nova Gorica — cities shaped by a history of division and now engaged in rethinking the border as a space of connection, dialogue, and transformation within the framework of GO!2025.
As curator Daniele Capra writes, language plays a central role in Matteo Attruia’s practice. For the artist, words are not simply descriptive or poetic tools, but critical devices capable of challenging conventions. Attruia uses language to overturn meaning, revealing alternative grammars and deliberately unconventional structures.
In his work, language becomes a way to make visible what usually remains implicit or unseen, exposing the ambiguities and contradictions of reality. As Capra recalls, echoing Paul Klee, art does not reproduce what is visible, but makes visible.
The idea of the border runs throughout the project as a political, psychological, and existential issue. Every border strengthens the sense of identity — both one’s own and that of the other — but at the same time reinforces stereotypes. In the works developed in Gorizia, the border appears as an unstable and suspended condition, a fragile space where the possibility of a shared “we” is constantly questioned.
“For me, the border is not a precise limit, not a line that separates,” says Attruia. “I experience it as an open place, a possibility, where the self and the other coexist.”

Artist:
Born at a certain point in time, he does not seek a safe landing. In his skillful journey as a “refugee of concepts,” he prefers a reassuring question over a questionable answer.
His research, always infused with irony, finds doubt where others see certainty. Through elegant and ironic short circuits, he works with a wide range of media, including painting, photography, neon, text, and the reuse of everyday objects (L. Conti).
He has exhibited in numerous cities, including Milan, Naples, Rome, Bolzano, Paris, Prague, Vienna, and New York.
In 2018, he created It’s Up to You for the Illy Art Collection, followed in 2022 by the limited-edition cup Cupside Down, again for Illy.
He has also collaborated with several companies, developing internal workshops that resulted in one or more site-specific installations (including projects in 2022 with Irinox, Covelano Marmi, and Concerie Presot).
He won the Arte in Balossa Prize for the creation of a permanent work in Parco Nord, Milan, with the project Belvedere. His work ERO(E) was acquired by Museion and is now part of its permanent collection.
