Throughout history, we have used fiction as a way to help us organize our thinking and deal with our messy human relationships, especially during times of abrupt changes. From Greek myths to contemporary literature, the creation of alternative worlds has been a way to explore concerns about the condition of the individual and the socio-political environment that determines it.

In this retrospective, Yoanny Aldaya presents a series of photographs that explore the body as a field of hybridization and transformation. He creates characters and narratives of ritualistic nature were he find the dependent construction of the individual and collective being.

Bending the limits of gender, where sexuality and sensuality are used as tools to challenge stereotypes and clichés, Aldaya shows us, with enigmatic symbolism, the capacity to mutate and transform his body. His images remind us of the surrealist tradition of dreams and take us into the world of the torments of the psyche.

In an attempt to surpass his own identity, the artist uses self-representation as a means through which to talk about the plural individual, trying to reveal how many entities can reside within the same person. Aldaya's work becomes an introspective negotiation of the artist that collides with the environment that surrounds him, creating meanings that are not imposed but that result from the relationships we create with the characters represented.

Aldaya proposes a theatrical vision of the twisted, hypocritical, and cynical nature of the individual as a social being, an allegory where characters and spaces are constructed to confront what is avoided, reveal what is hidden, and proclaim what has been silent in Cuban society.
