Solitude; an international online solo exhibition by Carmen Schaefer opens on November 10 and will continue through December 10, 2021.
As she wrote in her statement, her style is not altogether ‘real’ and not quite ‘surreal’. It evolves more and more to expressionism as charcoal takes a more dominant position. Shadows are pervasive, people are isolated, and barren landscapes surround them. Memories of t imes past are evoked by inanimate objects, which have a bittersweet presence. The scene is punctuated with subtle undercurrents of emotions. Sunny imagery and vibrant color may paradoxically envelope a forlorn spirit waiting for life to happen or an object that has seen life already, as a poignant sense of ‘absence’ pervades the drawing belying the apparent simplicity of the subject.
