The World We Live In, an international online exhibition by Greta Benavides, officially opens on May 20 and will continue for two months until July 20, 2025.
In The World We Live In, artist Greta Benavides invites us into a vibrant, deeply personal exploration of identity, place, and purpose—stitched, painted, and assembled with love, memory, and political urgency. Spanning fiber art, painting, collage, and sculpture, this exhibition is both a celebration of culture and a witness to struggle, reflecting the layered world we all share.
Born in Denver and shaped by her formative work alongside civil rights icons Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Cesar Chavez, Benavides brings decades of lived activism into her art. Her early career was steeped in the documentation of political and social movements, creating bold wood wall reliefs and poignant paintings that chronicled war, migration, and injustice. Now retired from her 30-year teaching career, she turns to fiber and textile arts with fresh vibrancy and unshakable purpose.
Each piece—whether a patchwork quilt of dancing African women, a fiber depiction of traditional Mexican folkloric scenes, or a vivid urban street scene in Colima—reflects her commitment to representing the cultural heartbeat of communities that often go unseen. From the proud figure of a parrot adorned in bright hues to the dynamic rhythm of dancers twirling in technicolor skirts, Benavides stitches together a mosaic of global life with care and authenticity.
Her travels through Mexico, often in the company of her service dog Emmy—who makes charming cameos in several artworks—offer more than inspiration; they offer connection. These works are not souvenirs of a journey but testimonies of a shared humanity. With expressive colors, rich textures, and cultural storytelling, Benavides brings the viewer into intimate moments: marketplaces humming with life, serene rural paths, and sun-drenched balconies overlooking distant mountains.

Greta Benavides was born in Denver,Colorado
Ms. Benavides was adopted into a progressive family who was involved in the civil rights and farm workers movement. She now lives Buena Park California and Santiago Colima Mexico.
Through her experience as a young person working with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Cesar Chavez, it became important to document current events through college and painting.
Received an Associated degree in fine arts at Santa Ana College, bachelor degree with honors in fine arts at California State University Fullerton and a Master degree in education at Biola University. She taught elementary students for 30 years. During which time she created a serious of political work, wood wall reliefs and paintings depicting political currents events. Using assemblage, college, and acrylic paint she documented human struggle of war and immigration.
After retirement Ms. Benavides began using textiles with fussy cut techniques to create cultural quilts and wall hangings. Through her travels with her service dog Emmy, she began creating colorful works of cultural activities in Mexico through textiles, watercolor, and oil paintings.
