Light has a secret life, and Richard Smukler’s camera seems determined to find it. In his infrared photographs, the world does not disappear, it shifts frequency. Trees turn pale and radiant, skies deepen into theatrical blues and blacks, water holds reflections like memory, and familiar parks, gardens, bridges, and swamplands become charged with a strange, beautiful stillness. His solo exhibition, Infrared Photography: Another Dimension, presented from 01 June 2026 to 01 August 2026 at https://www.exhibizone.com/infrared-photography-another-dimension-exhibition, invites viewers into landscapes transformed by invisible light, intuitive perception, and emotional atmosphere.
Smukler’s infrared vision does not simply document place; it reveals a hidden emotional temperature within it. His artist statement speaks of intuitive landscapes as backdrops for personal emotion, and this exhibition embodies that philosophy with remarkable clarity. Through infrared photography, light behaves differently. Foliage turns pale, almost spectral. Shadows gain density. Blue skies become intense, dramatic fields. Ordinary parks, gardens, bridges, swamps, and manmade structures become stages for reflection, solitude, and wonder.
In works such as Cypress Creek #1, the bridge pulls the eye forward with strong linear perspective, while the bright trees and dark railings create a striking contrast between invitation and mystery. High wire turns a utility pole and power lines into a minimal yet powerful composition, where human infrastructure cuts across an expansive sky and a glowing landscape. In Arthur Marshall State Park #3, the wooden structure at the edge of still water introduces a quiet architectural presence, while the reflection below deepens the sense of suspension and calm. Swampscape 1 and Swampscape #2 use water, horizon, cloud, and reflection to create meditative fields of silence, each one carrying a different emotional weight.
The botanical works expand this otherworldly language. Mounts Botanical Gardens #4 looks upward into the sculptural branching of a palm, transforming the tree into an almost anatomical structure of light, texture, and rhythm. Mounts botanical gardens #3 and Mounts Botanical Gardens #1 illuminate foliage with a soft radiance, while Morikami Gardens #1, #2, #3, and #4 move between floral intimacy, vertical monumentality, leafy silhouettes, and close-up organic structure. Through varied camera angles, from upward gazes to panoramic views and reflective horizons, Smukler allows nature to appear both earthly and unknown.
