Color, motion, and imagination collide in Richard Mittelstadt’s Artist’s Improvisations, an exhibition that embraces abstraction as a space of freedom and invention.
Presented online via https://www.exhibizone.com/artist-improvisations2-exhibition, this collection of acrylic paintings demonstrates Mittelstadt’s remarkable ability to transform the elements of design—line, form, texture, and color—into bold visual statements that invite viewers to wander between chaos and harmony, order and spontaneity.
Each canvas is a stage for discovery. In works such as Contemplation, glowing spheres hover within textured fields of red, white, and blue-gray, like fragments of thought suspended in air. In Restless Spirits, energetic arcs and bursts of color surge across the surface, embodying movement too wild to contain. Fluorescence radiates with high contrasts of fuchsia and green, exploding like a cosmic bloom, while Feeling of Joy captures delight itself in cascades of luminous orbs that pulse through warm, glowing layers.
Mittelstadt’s improvisations move seamlessly between order and release. Some compositions ripple with curving lines and biomorphic rhythms, as seen in Tranquility and Tryin’ to Catch the Wind, where color seems to breathe, expand, and dissolve into atmospheric space. Others lean toward geometric interplay, with grids, textures, and layered marks recalling the language of structures and urban patterns. Across these approaches, Mittelstadt’s acrylics show extraordinary versatility: transparent veils brush against dense impasto, hard-edged shapes cut through clouds of spray, luminous hues intensify as if lit from within.
What unites the series is a sense of improvisation that feels deeply intentional. Like a jazz musician bending melody around silence, Mittelstadt bends color and form around emptiness and space. Circles appear and reappear—sometimes as cosmic bodies, sometimes as playful punctuation, sometimes as the anchor in a field of flux. His lines swirl, break, and regroup, reminding us that improvisation is not chaos, but the art of listening to possibility.
After decades teaching art and refining his voice across media, Mittelstadt has found in acrylic painting the medium that allows him to wander without restraint. His improvisations are personal yet universal—visual interpretations of wonder, tension, hope, and release. They carry us into landscapes we do not recognize yet somehow feel, into sensations that exist just at the edge of language.
In Artist’s Improvisations, Mittelstadt does not give us answers; he gives us experiences—immediate, alive, and unrepeatable.

Artist:
Since childhood, Rick has always been interested in mark-making, especially mechanical drawing. With such a strong mechanical aptitude, Rick envisioned his future in architecture. That changed in college when he was encouraged by his older sister to take a few art courses.
After changing his major, he graduated with a BS degree in Art Education and a Master's Degree in Studio Art. During his 38 years in teaching middle and high school art education, Rick created and sold watercolor paintings at numerous outside art and craft fairs. After retiring from teaching, he switched his painting medium to acrylics. In the past several years, Rick has had numerous indoor exhibitions and won many awards for his acrylic paintings.
For many years, while still finding time to paint, Rick had volunteered his time as treasurer for four non-profit art organizations. Nowadays, Rick focuses on painting, camping trips, and yard/garden work.
