OPENING DRINKS: THURSDAY 3 SEPTEMBER, 6PM
EXHIBITION: 3 SEPTEMBER – 3 OCTOBER

Kᾱryn Taylor’s work embodies the concept of potentiality. She explores the theory of a space where something can exist and not exist simultaneously – a state where anything is possible, before it collapses into reality. Working with light, shadow and negative space, Taylor creates ephemeral and experiential works. The viewer is challenged to participate with an unseen world, a world of refracted light and the immaterial alchemy of a dual existence. Taylor’s works consider a narrative of endless possibility, rather than a definitive and certain statement. What is possible, and what is actual? It is up the viewer to come to their own conclusions.

For her upcoming solo exhibition at Anna Pappas Gallery, Taylor will be presenting a new body of installation and light works. Referencing formalism in its minimalist style, her work inhabits a space that exists between the material and the immaterial, cognition and precognition, ontology and epistemology. Her conceptual rigor incubates within the boundless parameters of light, reflection and refraction.

Taylor holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) from Massey University, and completed her Masters of Fine Arts (First Class) at Elam, Auckland. Selected exhibitions include Light, 2015, 30 Upstairs, Wellington; Sandra Bushby and Kāryn Taylor, 2015, Window, Auckland; New Zealand Sculpture on Shore, 2014, Fort Takapuna, Auckland; Waikato Contemporary Art Awards, 2014, Waikato Museum, Hamilton; Jacob’s Ladder, 2014, Corner Gallery, Auckland; Abstract Philosophy, 2013, 30 Upstairs, Wellington; and Quietly Confident, 2012, SOFA Gallery, University of Canterbury. She has been a finalist for several awards, such as the Wallace Art Awards, 2014; the Waikato Contemporary Art Awards, 2014; and the Lola Anne Tunbridge Award, 2012.
