Vin Ryan - Dirt World

Categories:

Vin Ryan has invited his family, friends and various acquaintances to sweep the floors of their houses, collect their sweepings; the discarded, dirt, grime and dust, and submit these sweepings to the artist for aesthetic consideration. The collective effort of this strange request will be presented in Ryan’s upcoming solo exhibition Dirt World.

Ryan believes that with each sweep, contained within each dustpan, is a memorial - a sample of life - as revealing as a diary.

The stuff we sweep up might speak to us about ourselves in any number of ways but one thing’s for sure - we don’t want other people to see it. Nothing motivates the desire to sweep the floor more than the possibility of imminent visitors. To sweep is to remove shame. – Vin Ryan

Dirt World will feature a selection of Vin Ryan’s photographs of these potentially exposing and surprisingly beautiful sweepings. Through the exhibition the viewer is invited to peruse the dust created by others, both abject and attractive, and to consider their own detritus.
