Karen Casey - Pucker Up

Country:

Categories:

We all think we know how a piece of music sounds, but could you accurately whistle your favourite Hollywood soundtrack?

This is the challenge that artist Karen Casey has given each of the performers in her new video work Pucker Up, a playful exploration of how people young and old recall iconic movie themes.

As the multi-screen video work reveals, an original score can alter with each iteration, regardless of how iconic or memorable it might be, yet somehow in the muddle that we make of it, we are still able to agree... that's definitely it!

For the work Casey brings together a selection of friends and acquaintances, including identities from the visual and performing arts and music industry such as Johnnie Walker, Steve Kilbey and Djon Mundine.
In editing these tuneful and not-so-tuneful whistling renditions, Casey creates a work wherein the whole becomes more than the sum of its parts. It is a musical feast that highlights the not always accurate nature of memory. Casey has long been interested in human perception and cognition. She is well known for her ambitious explorations into the arts and cognitive neuroscience. Pucker Up examines the processes through which we receive, record and reiterate - albeit in a humorously entertaining manner.
