A Love Uneven

Categories:

Alexandra Wiesenfeld's A Love Uneven is an exhibition of oil paintings offering brief, closely encountered narrative moments between a woman/sculpture and a ram/sheep, calling upon and torquing the traditions of both Classical Greek art and Romanticism. The paintings reference an artistic tradition in which the pain of grief or the ecstasy of spirituality became fodder for humanistic gesture in stone or paint, but Wiesenfeld's works themselves inhabit a discomfiting space in which the critical distance necessary for subjective entry is disallowed, and where the sensual and the immovable come face to face. The show will run from March 23rd to April 27th, with an opening reception for the artist on Saturday, March 23rd, from 6-8pm.

Artist ( Description ):

Alexandra Wiesenfeld is a German-born, Los Angeles based artist, who works primarily in oil paint on canvas, and mixed-media on paper. Wiesenfeld draws and paints in layers, allowing the history of ideas to overtly inform her final choice of imagery. Temporality, choice, and an insistent dialogue between reason and emotion (which Wiesenfeld presents as two parts of the same whole) are frequent themes in her practice, along with a consistent use of multi imagery- often involving a juxtaposition of human and animal forms - and a visceral use of color.

Wiesenfeld has exhibited her work in recent solo exhibitions at gallery km and the Happy LionGallery (now Nye + Brown) in Los Angeles, as well as in group exhibitions in Germany, NewYork, and throughout California. She received her BFA from Pomona College and an MFA fromMontana State University, and is currently an Associate Professor at Los Angeles City College.
