PLEASE JOIN US FOR AN EXQUISITE EXHIBIT of printmaking and sculpture by Jennifer D. Anderson of Virginia, and Margaret Realica of San Francisco.
JENNIFER D. ANDERSON brings us a series of small, delicate etchings layered with photographs and paper that she calls “SENSATE”. Beautifully drawn, each print is a visual poem that echoes Victorian-era anatomical illustration. In her own words, “These little prints are excursions into the sense modalities. The backgrounds are taken from pinhole photographs. Images of the body, soft muted tones derived from skin and hair. Overtop, wrapping around and through are images from the mechanics of the body. My work is about layers. Images are placed one on top of another – dry aged skin on top of a formal school portrait or delicate lace below an x‐ray. Processes are combined as well such as the layering of a dry point print onto a pinhole photograph printed onto whisper-thin Japanese paper. I layer to reflect how human identity is itself layered and essentially a composite of stories, memories, information and physical sensations, as well as the mechanisms that make one human”. Ephemeral and evocative, these prints are vibrant jewels, compelling us to look beneath the surface of ourselves into our own deeper layers.
MARGARET REALICA’S dynamic sculptures will grace our gallery with their subtle passion and beautifully composed elements. Ms. Realica uses disparate materials---acrylic Lucite, wire, metal gears and wheel-thrown ceramic forms---to create elegant three-dimensional arrangements. Not merely casual collections of randomly found objects, these shimmering assemblages combine thoughtfully selected parts to their best effect. Margaret has lived and worked in several geographic locations and this has influenced her work. She tells us, “I have been attracted to the prevailing stark, contrasting opposites. A dichotomy that ranges from the ancient and contemporary to the organic and the mechanical or to the bleak and the brilliant. Seeing the interaction between the two and of how one affects the other. How one initiates the transformation of the other. Initially there is the cutting edge between the two but eventually a bonding and coexistence of both. My method of working includes playing with deconstruction and reconstruction. Suspending layers of images, drawing and porcelains, then reconnecting with wires, gears and machine parts”.These fine sculptures are breathtaking to behold!
