Statements From the 3 Artists Whose Art is Shown Above

James Campbell: I expect I will always explore creative use of materials in my search for new insights and methods of visual presentation. My panel work involves building wooden support panels and applying entire sheets of paint to the prepared panels. I am challenged with painting the image in reverse, working from foreground to the background resulting in a vinyl-like acrylic paint sheet. I love the enigmatic nature of this surface, where you can see the immediacy of the strokes, but are presented with a glossy smooth surface.  campbellarts.net

Karen Johnston: Creating art is cathartic. I seek the peace the process gives. Delving into the unknown and resurfacing with colorful paintings from the depths of exploration not only feels satisfying but also empowering. I use mixed media because I want all possibilities available to me when I am roaming the halls of my imagination. Acrylic paint, paper, charcoal, pencil, pastel, ink, and natural elements work well together and offer endless options to instinctively communicate whatever it is that feels important.  studiokarenjohnston.com

Lorraine Brennan: Texture and pattern play a key role in my work. I love using contrasting mark-making, whether from my paint brush, a palette knife, or a piece of collage paper. In the painting, “Next Stop”, I collaged a mixed media purse that the main figure has hanging from her shoulder. It is made from layering thick aluminum sheeting on heavy watercolor paper. Absorbent ground is then laid on top of the aluminum sheeting and acrylic painted on top. The rest of the painting is oil.  lorrainebrennan.com
