CIVA welcomes Lawan Glasscock as new Executive Director

MADISON, WISCONSIN – January 8, 2019 – Christians in the Visual Arts (CIVA) today announced that its board of directors has appointed Dr. Lawan Glasscock as Executive Director, effective immediately. Glasscock has served as the organization’s interim director since September when Cameron Anderson, who held the ED position for 10 years, left to pursue new endeavors. CIVA’s board decided unanimously to extend the offer to Glasscock after a rigorous three-month national search that included highly qualified candidates from across the country.

Glasscock brings to CIVA more than 25 years of leadership experience in arts administration and non-profit operation. She has worked as an independent consultant assisting domestic and international organizations with cultural and ethical stewardship, philanthropy, and leadership transition. Her client base represents a wide range of religious, art, and education institutions, including Dallas Theological Seminary, Office of the Patrons of the Arts in the Vatican Museum, Gordon College, and Christians in Public Service. She is currently on the board of directors for Image Journal, and is a long time mentor with Global Shapers Community, an initiative of the World Economic Forum. Glasscock has a Ph.D. in Archaeology (Paleo-Christian Visual Culture) from the Ratisbonne Pontifical Institute.

“We are at a critical moment in the organization’s history, building the strong financial foundation and operational structure needed to expand our programs and value to the Christian art conversation,” said Wayne Adams, chair of the CIVA board of directors. “During this time of transformation, there is no better person to lead CIVA. Lawan is a proven executive with expertise in business vision, capacity building and fund development, exactly what is needed as we enter our next chapter,” he added.

Glasscock said, “As I experience the commitment of staff, board, patrons and membership to CIVA and its mission, it is clear the organization is able to prosper and exponentially grow its cultural engagement and strategic partnerships. I want to be part of that.”

Founded in 1979, CIVA’s long standing vision is to help artists, collectors, critics, curators, scholars, and church leaders explore the profound relationship between art and faith. The non-profit’s programs include SEEN Journal, art exhibitions and publications, national conference, regional symposiums, and a leadership program for women working in the visual arts. CIVA members, who represent diverse religious traditions, artistic media, and geographic regions, are united under the call “Serious Art. Serious Faith.” More information about CIVA is available at the website civa.org. CIVA is headquartered at 849 East Washington Ave., Suite 212, Madison WI 53703. Office phone: 608.433.9339.
