Art of the SURF Art Exhibition, Benefit to Surfrider Foundation

City:
Palos Verdes Penninsula, Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach

The passion of surfers, artists and environmentalists unite in this three gallery summer long benefit Art of the Surf exhibition, to celebrate surf culture, raise public awareness and support efforts to protect and preserve our coastal environment.

Surf is the operative motivator here. Tranquil seascapes, harbor scenes, or Polynesian floral arrangements need not apply. Surf is what happens when the ocean’s heartbeat hits the terra firma. It never sleeps, is ever pulsating, and always dodging conformity. It claws at our foundations, provides oceanic thrill rides, and makes sunbeams dance. As this collection attests, surf inspires imaginations, powers creativity, and fuels dreams.  There is no single way to interpret the enigmatic quality of this exhibit’s focus. Of the hundreds of submissions, you’re looking at the pieces that capture some facet of surf’s multiple personalities. Together these pieces help interpret one of God’s most awe-inspiring inventions.

The sport of surfing is dependant on nature and surfers develop an awareness of the state of our oceans. The more time one spends in the ocean, the more one becomes fascinated by its complexity and, sadly, the more one realizes how quickly it is being destroyed by increased human alteration of coastlines -- harbors, break walls, dredging, etc., and global weather patterns, which interfere with normal swell generation. The waves and the life beneath them are in jeopardy.

Proceeds from this exhibition will be donated to the Surfrider Foundation, an environmental organization based in the surf community. The foundation aims to preserve the oceans and keep surf spots protected and open to the public.
