HASSELL commenced in 1938, 5 years after the closure of the Dassau Design School founded by the famous Architect, Walter Gropius. Colin Hassell worked in Europe prior to the opening of the Practice, and the fervour of Modernism and the teachings of the Bauhaus were a great influence at that time. The early work of the partnership, Claridge, Hassell and McConnell, produced some exemplar instances of avant-garde modernist architecture. John Morphett who joined the Practice in 1962 had previously been responsible for running Walter Gropius office in Rome.
John, who later became Chairman of the Firm, brought with him the cultural legacy of the Bauhaus, a belief in collaboration as a powerful design methodology.
