The Espejo Organization for the Arts presents “EOarts Performance Art Series 2016: Session 1”. The first night of this four-night series will host two performances; “Traps” by Huise He, and “Untitled 6” by Yao Zhang and Brian O’Mahoney from the NoodleRice Studio on May 6th, 2016 at Rabbithole Projects.

“Traps” is a body endurance performance art piece that consists of a series of contemporary dance movements and gestures that are linked to phrases that are given to the audience to say. When a certain phrase is said, a certain action will be executed by the artist while she stands with her eyes closed in the center of a floor filled with mousetraps that the audience has placed. The performance illustrates the outside obstacles and internal struggles that the artist has experienced when pursuing her dreams. Huisi He is a New York-based and Chinese-born artist who believes that art came to her during her struggle to find freedom of expression in an oppressive country. She received her B.A. in Communication and Journalism from the Hunan Normal University in China and M.F.A. in Studio Art from Florida State University. In 2007, Huisi felt compelled to rebel against her culture and left China for the United States. In 2015, she moved to New York City and has since been making art that has acted as a healing process for her to let go the negative experiences she had in China.

NoodleRice Studio will present “Untitled 6”, an interactive performance art piece put on by Yao Zhang and Brian O’Mahoney. This piece is a surreal body transformation scene that attempts to explore the way the human body is understood in contemporary culture. NoodleRice is a collective born in 2008 working at the intersection of film/video and live performance. The art group was first conceived by Yao Zhang, a set designer for stage and film productions, and Liang Guo, a film director and cinematographer, while studying at the Beijing Film Academy. The founders of NoodleRice are dedicated to combine their knowledge and love for film and live performance, based on their observation and thoughts about human condition, society, politics, nature, space, time and all the things that exist in this universe. NoodleRice’s mission is to create works that performers and that the audience alike experience as real.

The Espejo Organization for the Arts is a Bushwick-based arts management organization that is committed to promote the artistic endeavors of mid-career and emerging international artists and creatives. This performance art night is part of EOarts Performance Art Series 2016, an action art program that aims to survey international performance art practices and bring them closer to the public.“Through this performance art series we aim to offer an open and inviting platform where international artists and the public can meet. We want to invite the audience to participate in and engage with performance art, understanding better what this art medium is really about: the power of symbolic action.” said Kika Espejo, founder and director of the the organization.

The Rabbithole Projects Gallery, an art space located on the waterfront of the Dumbo Arts District in Brooklyn, will host EOarts Performance Art Series 2016. “Our goal is to provide the space and community access for talented artists to share their dreams, visions, and creations with inspired attendees. This performance art series will be an unforgettable experience,” said Shawn Lyons, Owner of Rabbithole Projects. “We are incredibly excited to host such an intriguing event.”
