To Accompany Something Invisible – an exhibition featuring installation boxes by Brooklyn-based artist Swoon – will be on view at Allouche Gallery in the Meatpacking District, starting April 27. This show marks the first time that the more personal, process elements of Swoon’s work, such as prep sketches and preliminary paper cutouts, will be displayed publicly. An opening reception will take place in the gallery on April 27, from 6pm-9pm.

Swoon, born Caledonia Curry, is best known for her life-size wheat paste prints and intricate paper cutouts. Her work has been featured at the Museum of Modern Art, Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, the Institute of Contemporary Art Boston, New Orleans Museum of Art, the Sao Paolo Museum of Art, and Brooklyn Museum.

To Accompany Something Invisible is Swoon’s most intimate exhibition yet. The title of the show is in homage to a quote from her favorite art writer, the late John Berger. This rare gallery show represents a transitional and reflective moment for Swoon as she prepares for a retrospective opening at the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati in September.

The exhibition also coincides with the completion of the third and final house that Swoon is building in Haiti through Konbit Shelter, her nonprofit organization. Established after the devastating 2010 earthquake, Konbit Shelter started as a sustainable building project, and has since developed into a long-term relationship between two communities, based on a shared commitment to the process of recovery.
