Sunday, 13 November 2016 - 10:00am

Join us for the the grand opening of the Manetti Shrem Museum at UC Davis! Free & open to the public. Nov 13 ~ Street fair starts at 10am, ribbon-cutting and public opening at noon. Live music, food trucks, and entertainment from 10-4pm.

Don't miss the 1,500 foot long colorful chain sculpture designed by artist Lisa Rybovich Crallé. The sculpture is comprised of 500 interconnected soft foam chain links. Each of the links has been painted by members of the general public, literally "linking" the museum with the community. The massive sculpture will weave and loop asymmetrically around the entrance of the museum, hanging from the outdoor canopy like an enormous piece of colorful jewelry.

The sculptural "ribbon" will be ceremoniously untied (rather than cut) by faculty, staff, alumni, donors, students and artists at noon on Nov 13th, after which the museum will be open to the public. Opening exhibitions include: Out Our Way, representing more than 200 examples of art from First Generation Faculty; Hoof & Foot, a video project by Chris Sollars that explores the symbiotic relationship between animals and students; and A Pot for a Latch, a participatory installation by Mexico City artist Pia Camil that invites the public to exchange “objects of desire.”

About the project:

Earlier this year  was commissioned to make a large site-specific sculpture that will act as the "ribbon" during the Museum's ribbon-cutting ceremony on Nov 13. After some initial discussions with the museum, the design we landed on is a 1,500 foot long colorful chain comprised of 500 interconnected soft foam links. Each of the links has been painted by members of the general public during a series of free workshops, literally "linking" the museum with the community. Once it is assembled, the sculpture will weave and loop asymmetrically around the entrance of the museum, hanging from the outdoor canopy like a massive piece of colorful jewelry. (There are also 250 golden charms that will hang from the links).

The sculpture will be on view at the entrance of the museum until the end of November, after which point a large segment of it will be installed in the rafters of Davis City Hall, and other segments will be distributed elsewhere (the Shrem will keep a segment of it, and Verge Center for the Arts will also keep a segment). I hope you can make it to the opening day (Nov 13) or the Press-Preview event (Nov 10). I will likely be at both and I'd love to see you!

About the Grand Opening (Nov 13):

To celebrate the grand opening of the museum, UC Davis has organized a street fair from 10-4pm on the street facing the museum. Live music, performance, food trucks, and entertainment will be provided by campus and community partners. The events and entertainment have been designed and organized by the museum in conjunction with its program partner, Verge Center for the Arts in Sacramento.

The sculptural "ribbon" will be ceremoniously untied (rather than cut) by faculty, staff, alumni, donors, students and artists at noon on Nov 13th, after which the museum will be open to the public. Lisa Rybovich Crallé, who earned her master’s degree in Studio Art from UC Davis in 2011, designed the massive sculptural ribbon, and 500 members of the public decorated its links at a series of free community events in Davis, Sacramento, Oakland and Napa.
