COLLECTIVE DISSENT: RETHINKING RATIONALITY
Dab Art is pleased to present Collective Dissent: Rethinking Rationality at H Gallery. The idea of abstract painting and mixed media is to create objects without reference to the world outside, or as a strictly vestigial image or form. The artists in this exhibition have each pursued abstractions, sculpture and photography with unique and individual character within the realms of mixed media modernism. This exhibition aims to show these works in sympathetic relationships to each other, in spaces with ideal light and proportions. The installations and pieces exhibited in Collective Dissent represent a new visual language based on assemblages of the unbounded world, rejecting mediocrity and redefining high art. Art idealism is confronted and explored through the works of three principled and distinguished artists.
Glenn Carter stands as one of the most inventive artists ever exhibited by Dab Art. His approach to making art using conventional materials and everyday objects has eviscerated the distinctions between medium and genre, abstraction and representation, while creating an enduring change in the relationship between artist, image, and viewer. From the outset, the incidental, the immediate, and the perception of a presence greater than his own artistic virtuosity seems to drive Carter’s creative energy.
In all aspects of her work, Michelle Robinson expresses her intense relationship to both natural and urban landscapes, organic materials, and nature's elements. Also prevalent in Robinson's work are the themes of memory and the passage of time. Using photography, fabrics and encaustics Robinson creates astoundingly mindful works of art with ultimate concern, which she treats with the greatest tenderness and clarity. Existential awareness within the mystery and forces of temporal existence are evident but not overwhelming in her works for this exhibit.
Intimately scaled abstract works in oil by Yari Ostovany serves as the visceral anchor forCollective Dissent. These compound paintings contain the intensity and formal complexity of an artist’s life examined. Provocative tension is generated between formal properties and sublimated gestural content in dense compositions where tangles of structure dissolve into inchoate sensuousness. His ability to control what transpires, making sure that all gestures are sincere is an internal and external struggle that has been instrumental in forming Ostovany’s relationship to his own work.
