Kelley Millet: Free Falling / a solo exhibition
Agora Gallery begins the summer with Kelley Millet: Free Falling / a solo exhibition highlighting one of New York’s most pensive and questing abstract painters. Millet’s works are understated, yet there is turbulence just beneath the surface. The pieces explore the boundaries of texture, from raised streaks to dry-brush layering. In turn, texture is used as an entry point into repetition and color binaries. With some canvases several feet across, they are statement pieces. Amid the current atmosphere favoring figural work and digital photography, the paintings are an important reminder of what the mind can come up with when unattached from representation, as well as simply what the human hand can do. Pattern and color transcend the status of building blocks. Direction and speed of his movements become the star; like the great draftsmen of the 1950s, Millet makes his viewers watch the journey of his hand. Taken together, Millet’s pieces offers a symphony of feeling as expressed through the moves of a paintbrush. This is a body of work with an outstandingly defined point of view.
