AUSTIN IRVING - NOT AN EXIT

Wilding Cran Gallery is pleased to present Not An Exit, a solo exhibition by Los Angeles based photographer Austin Irving. On view May 16 to June 27, 2015, this exhibition marks Irving's first show at the gallery.

Not An Exit is a collection of large format photographs that Irving has been compiling since 2007. The subjects for the series are doorways and hallways, liminal spaces intended for movement that somehow appear impenetrable. Maze-like optical illusions occur when the linear elements align to simultaneously flatten and expand the two dimensional picture-plane. Void of cultural signifiers, belonging to no specific place or location, a universality of line and form reoccurs from image to image, offering a deeper assessment of the formal elements that make up the spaces we pass through and sometimes never truly see. As Irving explains, "We are going somewhere and yet - there seems to be no way out."

Austin Irving is a large format photographer, born and raised in New York City. She graduated with a BFA from the Department of Photography and Imaging at New York University and is currently based in Los Angeles.

Recent solo exhibitions include Artist Residency, Curio Gallery, Venice, CA, and CAVES, The Silverlake Art Company, Los Angeles, CA. Group exhibitions include Neither Here Nor There, Manifest Gallery, Cincinnati, OH; 4th Annual Juried Exhibition (Winner, Jury's Prize), Gallery 110, Seattle, WA; After Dark i & After Dark ii, Greg Moon Gallery, Taos, NM; Light & Memory, A/NT Gallery, Seattle, WA;  Metamorphosis & Photography of the Spectacular, b/G Gallery, Bergamot Station, Santa Monica, CA and has been recently featured in WIRED and inAINT BAD Magazine Issue 9.
