ARTIST BIO

Alison Winfield-Burns uses free-hand technique to create evocative paintings, signing her work “Alice.” Her memoir, which she illustrated herself, is expected for publication later this year.

Years growing up in Rome with her godmothers (Lady Jeanne Campbell and a Benedictine Abbess) have given Alison a sense of global cultural identity—her portraits radiate empathy. Although she studied alongside Elizabeth Peyton, Tim Gardner, and Richard Phillips at Columbia University, Alison’s style can’t be mistaken for any other. Intense use of colour is eclipsed by the projected personality of her subjects. Portrayal of a rainforest frog seems all about that one frog’s individuality: blue could not be a deeper sapphire and green is saturated emerald, but what we see is the engaging persona of a frog-prince in disguise.

Alison has a Merit Award from the National Academy and exhibitions include the first annual “Deck the Walls” at Manhattan’s New York Academy of Art (work sold). Her paintings have hung at International Rescue Committee (IRC) Headquarters in New York and the Republic of Korea Permanent Mission to the United Nations. She is an alumna of Columbia University (Art and Astronomy) and a former NASA Research Fellow at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. As a teenager, Alison was an early student of Allen Ginsberg at the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics, meeting her sweetheart to whom she was engaged in 2010. The magic of Alison’s artwork is that she paints happiness with the power of a romantic young revolutionary.
