Lacey Contemporary Gallery and Kachuna proudly presents a Slovak visual art exhibition supported by the Slovak Arts Council that features work by Lucia Dovičáková, Barbara Tutková, Jarmila Sabová, and Vlasta Žáková.
Curated by Ľuboš Lehocký
IN DIFFERENT STATE is an exhibition in response to the phenomenon of the primal experience of becoming a mother. The featured female artists individually portray the different physical, psychological, and social states that women encounter congruously. In the form of abstraction, mixed media, painting, and photography, the work touches upon individual experiences while serving as a shared societal response.
Lucia Dovičáková’s paintings exploits the extreme transformation and different states the female body endures during motherhood to parallel the phenomenon women experience socially, psychologically, and politically as a mother.
In Barbara Tutková’s exhibited photographic collection, the body is portrayed as a cocoon; an entity that can act as a shelter and a prison. The body finds itself in a natural, yet different, state, to which it can surrender or fight.
Through Jarmila Sabová’s action of painting and re-painting her pieces, she brings a different physical state to her work. The physical and literal metamorphous of her paintings bring new meaning and formal relations within her work.
In Vlasta Žáková’s textile paintings and objects, her pieces focus on the wild and spontaneous party life through its portrayed ambivalent character based on the inner experiences of being a woman personally and socially. Each piece reflects the inner personal experiences of being a woman and how that translates in a broader social sense.
