Embracing its ethos for connecting architecture and art, Anise Gallery finds new ways of exploring this relationship through new practices in fine art. In 2016 we are delighted to present artists from Slade School of Fine Art, Royal College of Art and Goldsmiths College.

Marina Višić studied MFA Fine Art at Slade School of Fine Art. Her practice has stemmed from an interest in materiality and how various textures and images are incorporated into landscapes. In recent years her practice has evolved from threadwork to video, and following her work for the Slade degree show 2016, she has been awarded  the Jeanne Szego Prize for imaginative use of colour. Marina’s work has been exhibited widely in The Netherlands including a solo show ‘Myriade’ at Noordbrabants Museum.

Kristina Chan studied MA Printmaking at Royal College of Art. Her work looks at subverting our knowledge of space and place through historical and contemporary analysis. The process for the ‘Collisions in Time’ series begins with an architectural site, where the artist is inspired by its histories, ruins and remains. Kristina is traditionally trained in lithography, etching, screen print and digital media manipulation, and has exhibited at CGP London, Musée de Louvre,  and New Ashgate Gallery among others. She has an upcoming solo show at Project 88 in Bombay, India this summer.

Julia Parkinson studied MA Sculpture at Royal College of Art. She is interested in the phenomenology and metamorphosis of material and depicts 3D textures and spaces in 2D forms. For her ‘Pool’ series featured at the RCA degree show, there is a certain performative element to the work, a static animation, as the medium arrives at its destination to reach a state of immobility. In this, there is an ontological enquiry as the work reaches a state of being, a stationary ‘becoming’, finding its objecthood. Julia’s work has featured in prominent exhibitions in recent years including Bloomberg New Contemporaries at the Institute of Contemporary Arts and Spike Island, Camden Arts Centre and Liverpool Biennale.

Elizabeth Byrne studied MFA Fine Art at Goldsmiths College. Her work as part of the Goldsmiths degree show incorporated photography and installation, expressing the motif of decadence and decay as bedfellows. The process of pieces such as ‘Anemone’, which is being shown in the Summer Graduate Show, begins with sculptural assemblages which are then filmed and photographed, resulting in large scale photographic collages. Elizabeth’s work has been listed for the Salon Art Prize, Anthology Art Prize at Charlie Smith, London, as well as being featured in shows and fairs at The Bargehouse, Vegas Gallery and FOLD Gallery.

Petter Yxell studied MFA Fine Art at Goldsmiths College. His interest in modular architecture is evident in his installation work ‘Unhabitat’, which incorporates concrete materiality and vernacular design from his home country, Sweden. Petter’s practice has been heavily influenced by examining architectural structures in both London and Glasgow, and investigating the ways in which the urban landscape is consumed and at the same time often holds a transcient status. He presents work from the Goldsmiths degree show for Anise Gallery and will showcase a new commission for the Edinburgh Art Festival this summer, having previously shown work at Royal Scottish Academy, Candid Arts Trust and Studio 41.

Linking the four artists is a passion for the architectural in the environment, whether this is through magnified textures and movements or stories of ‘place’ and ‘non-place’ situated in time. This is expressed through various media, including video art and screenprinting.
