The Brick Lane Gallery is pleased to present our latest LANDSCAPE: RURAL VS URBAN exhibition exploring the link and contrast between URBAN and RURAL environments. The exhibition aims to explore our views and interpretations of Landscapes and how the various settings have an impact on us on different levels. The exhibition features local and international artists who show a range of approaches to this subject matter, from Christopher Farrell’s cityscapes showing a combination of contemporary and period architecture, the vibrant artworks by Henriette J Busch exploring emotions and mood variations through the use of colour, to the inviting tranquil landscapes by Ted Hiscok. We welcome you to discover and experience the distinct creative processes focused on the Landscape genre.

You are warmly invited to join the exhibiting artists for a drink at the opening night of LANDSCAPE: RURAL VS URBAN at The Brick Lane Gallery – The Annexe open from 6pm-8.30pm on Wednesday 12th of November 2014.

FEATURED ARTISTS:

Beth Lardner (from UK) is currently living and studying in London. She has been on many photography courses which specialise in urban landscapes but a rural setting is where she is most inspired. She has been fortunate enough to experience many different places such as Iceland and England's idyllic west coast. She says that, more often than not her incentive for taking that perfect photograph is due to her poor memory. Beth needs to capture the moment in its best light, the way her eyes are seeing it, so as to keep that memory forever and share it with others. She loves being away from the hustle and finding tranquillity out of the city and she hopes to reflect this in her works. They represent her idea of peace, a wonderful life, and her idea of true natural beauty. She has also included the macro photography to show that in every breath-taking landscape, the little moments are the ones that make it perfect. She is giving these moments time in the spotlight.

Christopher Farrell (from UK) graduated in Visual Arts and from there he went on to study a Post-Graduate Diploma in Painting at the Royal Academy School of Art. He was invited to attend a reception by the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh at Buckingham Palace to recognise the achievements of young adults from throughout the United Kingdom who have excelled in their particular field. He creates artworks which are mostly based on London, but, he likes to be inspired by other cities around the world. Recent exhibitions include ComplexCity, OXO Gallery and the Jerwood Collection at the Jerwood Gallery. He has produced commissioned artworks for a number of Corporate clients including the British Embassy in Madrid.

With the City as his subject, he likes to construct paintings influenced by the geometry and space around architectural buildings. He likes to explore new technology and integrate it with modern and traditional painting/drawing processes and materials. He finds this combination exciting as it reflects the mix of contemporary and period architecture that forms the basis of the 21st Century skyline.

Fiona Bunn (from UK) has been a professional photographer since 2012, although she has been an enthusiastic photographer since childhood. She loves taking photographs when there is a story to be told, particularly relating to mountain scapes and the environment, although her work encompasses many different types of subject matter including the reporting of relief organisation work and urban life projects. Her work has also been published in the Guardian newspaper, and she regularly contributes work to Mountain websites and blogs. Fiona’s images examine the relationship between photographer and alpinist. The alpine community is diverse, multinational and supportive, with a desire to appreciate and express their shared interest. The images exhibited are some of those shared through social media mountaineering groups, and form the basis of a larger exhibition to be staged by Fiona in March 2015.

George Odlin (from UK) studied at Leeds College of Art and Leeds University under Patrick Hughes, Glynn Williams and Roy Slade. After Fine Art honours degree he taught in Grimsby until 1990. He continues to hold tutorials in the Lincolnshire Wolds town Louth, where he now lives. When not painting, George spends time sailing and fell-walking. At present his subjects are based on his experiences in London and The Thames. His work is part of private collections in the UK, Germany, Sweden, Australia and the U.S.A.

George’s paintings are the result of engagements with images. Approaches vary depending on the intensity of the emotions involved and the capacity of the memory. Expression works alongside analysis, and does not ignore structure. He would like his paintings to be considered as visual poems.

Gershon Kelman (from UK) possesses the learning disability of dyslexia. Until he found the camera at age 18, he had no idea of how to overcome the many obstacles put in front of him. He looks at things with a very unique prism and colorize his photographs using that very unique prism. With weeks of experimenting with colorization on my computer and selecting "out of the box” photos in the city of Los Angeles, where he presently resides, he produced a unique form of photography. His current projects include: Reflections, Pop LA, and LA in the Dark as well as New York City in the Dark, Tel Aviv in the Dark, and Downtown Austin in the Dark. He wanted to get the word out that a disability such as dyslexia does not have to hinder success and it does not have to be hidden. His goal is to mentor people with dyslexia and low self-esteem, which comes with the disability, to pursue their dreams in the arts follow their hearts and turn their disability into a gift.

Henriette J Busch (from UK) has always been interested in art and was drawing and painting from an early age, but because circumstances (parents, then husband) took her to live in six different countries on four different continents (Europe, Africa, South America, and North America) between the ages of 12 – 29, it was not until settling in England that she started to attend a variety of evening and extra-mural courses to explore life drawing, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking and textile design, culminating in studying Fine Art & Design at the University of Hertfordshire between 1999 and 2003. Since 2003, she has taken part in over 40 Exhibitions UK wide – Group Shows, Small Group Shows and 2 Solo Shows in Ely, Cambridge.

Henriette is a painter but also works in digital media, she combines the two disciplines to create unique and original images. She attempts to capture the essence of things, places and houses lived in long ago whose vivid colours and smells, whose windows and doorways have lingered at the edge of her memory. She tries to create an illusion, a feeling of heightened awareness in her images which in their final version often bear no resemblance to the original, often quite plain, image but have become enhanced and imbued with a dreamlike quality. Our memories too work like that, we often see past events and places in our minds eye in an enhanced way, and give them qualities they never really had. She works with different media and juxtaposes these with one another to change the original image, yet retain a recognizable element of it. Colour is a very important element in her work, she uses it to express feelings as it has so many moods.

Paul Mitchell (from UK) educated in Shropshire, BTEC National Diploma in Art and Design, National Diploma in Freelance Cartoon and Illustration.

He loves the feel and energy of urban life, He aims to communicate this in his work - the essence of movement, business and energy by painting instinctively and loosely. From the rain smeared and splattered windscreens to the dusk bringing a close to another hectic day in the city – He hopes to engage the viewer to his urban work.

Raluca Irina Ciorbaru (from Romania) has a background of physics and mathematics. She originally came to London in 2011 to study Architecture at the University of Westminster. Her work represents a study she has done during her third year of studying architecture and explores the relationship between place, movement and sound. Every piece is originally based on a pencil hand drawing, followed by subsequent layers of ink and digital painting. All pieces study the relationship between architecture and art and how the two merge.

 Rose Seber (from UK) was educated to 'O' level standard at Surbiton High School, then studied Design at Kingston School of Art. She later did an Open University degree in Maths and Computing, and more recently a BA Hons in Fine Art at Farnham. She exhibits with Guildford Art Society, Farnham Art Society, Ochre Print Studio, and the Society of Graphic Fine Artists. In 2010 she had a digital piece accepted for the Surrey Open Art Competition at the Lightbox and sold it. Earlier this year she had a solo exhibition at Godalming Museum, called 'Northern Light', and have arranged to show there again in 2016 with work based on the Scottish islands. She has twice had etchings shortlisted for the National Open Art Competition, and 'Tabby Cat' was long listed for the RA Summer exhibition.

Ted Hiscock (from UK) was born in 1946 in Wellington, Somerset. He was never without a pencil and paper and grew up under the influences of his father, Tom, an amateur water colourist of some merit and a cousin, Tony Griffin, a Berkhampstead artist who was a source of great inspiration. All through 4 decades of a medical career in the city of Birmingham, Ted developed his artistic career alongside and when he retired from the medical profession in 2012, he was ready to develop his art in a number of ways: oil, gouache, charcoal, pen & ink, wax sculptures including portraits, landscape, cityscape, nude and figure work in his repertoire. His style is modern, traditional and representative and he is passionate about the canals that permeate Birmingham and the West Midlands. He held 3 successful single solo exhibitions in Birmingham and currently has one in Port Vendres, South of France running to the end of November with a sole theme of ‘The Vine’.
