Anca Danila, with creative education in Cluj Romania and frequent journeys between Bistrita Romania and Dublin Ireland – where she lives, talks about identity in a mobile global world through painting, mirrors and Facebook statuses. Nasui collection & gallery presents her first solo show in Bucharest, May 30 – July 31 2015.

Nasui collection & gallery Bucharest produces a solo show for the artist Anca Danila, presenting a selection of artworks from 2008 to 2015. The curatorial approach took into consideration the artist’s interests in contemporary anthropology and sociology.

The transit to and fro geographical areas and cultural identities, the ongoing switch between the physical medium and the virtual one, bring types of identity crisis which are to be found almost everywhere.

Anca Danila started her creative path at high school Corneliu Baba” in Bistrita Romania, attended City College Dublin School, then back to Romania for BA and Ma in  Fine Arts, at University of Art and Design Cluj-Napoca. Her works were exhibited in Brisbane (Australia), Stuttgart (Germany), Pecs (Hungary), Leoben (Austria), Miami (USA), Copenhagen (Denmark). She was selected to participate in curated shows in Biennale Internazionale d’Arte Contemporanea Florence 2011 (Italia), IMOCA - Irish Museum of Contemporary Art Dublin (Ireland), Art Museum Arad Romania and The Mary Brogan Museum of Art and Science din Tallahassee/Florida (USA).

Anca talks of the contemporary individual who builds and ”puts on” different types of identities, created by external factors such as social, cultural or family ones. What they experience and live is in fact a continuing renegotiated relationship among the real identity and the constructed ones.

A new type of identity has emerged during last several years, the virtual one. It is easy to build: you only have to have a smartphone or a tablet. It is easy to control: you edit or delete, you tag or you report photo.

”The words are energy and create realities, it depends on us how we use them. My real identity is hidden in all artworks, leaving only the true one to be visible, through the image painted in oil on canvas.” (Anca Danila)

For the works in the series Accessing my own status”, Danila used a real…apple J, on which she made a collage out of her Facebook network statuses. She replicated this collage within her art. The painted apple appears in front of the character’s face, hiding mimics and features and revealing just written words.

”The message in a bottle on the apple surfaces the identity of the self and the reality it lives. Due to the collage, word and apple loose sense, both hiding the physical identity of the message carrier.” (Anca Danila)

The project ”Anca Danila – The importance of being...selfie” is scheduled May 30 – july 31, 2015 and is produced by Nasui collection & gallery.
