On Trending
Centred upon the reappropriation of what remains and the emergence of imagery that is sometimes assisted with text, dye, play-doh, beads, silk and paper. On Trending, speaks to the current state of in and out: how we as a society decide what is right and wrong – from the tiles on our bathroom walls to the cups we drink from. What we notice and what we ignore; how we frame our art; how we make our art; how we determine ‘old’ and ‘new’; how we become aware or do not realise the influence of the academy and academic art practice on our sense of purpose and meaning.
Samuel Hodge (b. Glen Innes, Australia) is an artist whose projects have taken the form of exhibitions, publications, online platforms, fashion shoots and text-based work. His practice is centred on the reappropriation of what remains and the emergence of imagery that is sometimes assisted with text, dye, play-doh, beads, silk and paper. Subjects vary and often a queerish gaze is applied to manipulate the intention of the original in order to interrogate modes of narrative and constructions of the self at play. What remains is instead submitted to a state of ambiguity; to a constant state of ecstatic and desirous resistance and conclusive representation.
Since opening in Melbourne, Australia in 2003, Anna Pappas Gallery has forged a reputation for outstanding contemporary art projects, showcasing leading practitioners from Australia and abroad. Representing both established and emerging artists, the Gallery features those whose works make a significant contribution to the philosophical, creative and cultural discourses of our time. Recognizing the impact of globalization across these sectors, Anna Pappas Gallery has attracted artists based in Australia, Europe and Asia whilst also undertaking projects in diverse geographical locations. Notable amongst these ventures has been our ongoing participation at Art Fairs in Melbourne, Hong Kong, Korea, Singapore and USA.
